Notes:
- Allow foals to obtain colostrum-containing milk within 6 hours of birth and for up to 3 days if possible. On day 4 start feeding Wet Nurse™ 18-18-12 7 Foal Milk Replacer. Solution temperature should not be greater than 38 º C when fed. Feedings must be evenly spaced and frequency of feedings decreased gradually to avoid digestive upset. To increase total daily consumption, feed small amounts more frequently. If foals develop scours of nutritional origin, maintain the amount of milk replacer solution fed, but reduce the concentration of the solution by 25-50 % for 1 to 2 days, depending on severity of scours. Provide electrolytes, if necessary, and gradually return to full feeding levels. Supply water free choice at all times.
B. FREE CHOICE-FEEDING
- Foals will readily adapt to free-choice open-pail feeding after 10 to 14 days of age. To feed free-choice, estimate daily consumption and feed cold (4 º c) in 3-4 equal feedings per day. Regardless of weight or age, do not allow foals to consume more than 15% of their body weight per day. Supply water free choice at all times.
- In addition, supply foals with high quality hay free choice at one week of age. Supply a starter diet after 2 weeks of age. Observe foals closely for digestive upset and exercise them daily.
CAUTION
- Directions for use must be carefully followed. Weaning can proceed between 5 and 7 weeks.
